New Hope Release's 'Just Like Yesterday'

New Hope is a punk band from Staten Island comprised of Cedric Brice (guitar/vocals), Justin Alpert (guitar/vocals), Rosario Panarelli (bass/vocals), and Dino Casalino (drums). They are hoping to release their new EP, Unlucky 17, this spring and recently released their first single, "Just Like Yesterday."

"Just Like Yesterday" is a slower song chalk full of punk guitar tones, drum patterns, and vocal work. They mix it up by throwing in a piano part, and musical solo/bridge part.

The chorus is catchy, and the singer's voice goes well with the song. I like the background vocals and harmonies and the "oh-oh's" in the first chorus.

Be sure to give this band a listen if you like 90s punk like MxPx, Slick Shoes, and old Green Day.

Breaking Even
Hmmm...Does this count as a music video? Who knows, but it's awesome. Shout out to the guys in Breaking Even for having fans who care enough to make fan videos. Check it out, it's pretty funny!

Audioscar
Had the privilege of meeting these guys on Sunday after they connected with my band and helped get us a show in Brooklyn at Five Spot Soul Food (awesome venue, staff, and food by the way). Hurricane Sandy Benefit Show - "Get Young"

Spread the Rumor, Sandy Benefit show
I don't know why but I have been putting this blog post off for a awhile. I almost felt like it had to be written the night the show happened, but I have a clear head and a goal in mind. First and foremost I would like to thank everyone for the love on the Sandy documentary. I put a lot of hard work into it, and now we'll have a complimentary piece to go with it.

Please listen to this as you read and download it for FREE!

E.N.D. performing at the benefit. Photo by Vlad Grach.
December 23rd 2012 will forever go down as one of my favorite memories as a musician. One day I'll tell my children about the night their father helped usher in some of the best moments of his youth while  uniting friends, family, and a community to do something amazing. I'm not trying to sound pompous or gloat in this fact, but I will say that I take great pride in the event that was of course made possible with everyone who played, the Full Cup, and those who spent their hard earned money to give back to people in need, and Jay Campbell who saw my vision as well...amazing.

I'm getting married in April, reality check, I'm not growing up anymore, I'm grown. Some of you are there with me, and some of you are getting there. It's tough, it's scary, it's a little depressing. Everything I once knew, or "still" think to be true is going to change. I'm not a kid, I'm no longer in school (I finished), I have to work and make money. I can't sit around and play music in my basement all day while fantasizing about rocking the Garden someday. (I now do that at my desk at work ha). I'm not trying to be a buzz kill, but the point is as we grow older we lose a lot of what we used to love in the shuffle of life. So for one night, and perhaps for the last time, the 23rd helped me remember and relive everything I ever loved about being a musician from Staten Island and rocking the faces off the crowd with my "musical family."
Patrick, Justin, Mike. Classic POF.

When my band Process of Fusion started out in 2007, it was just Patrick and I and we were terrible. We played our first show on a two hour notice. I played drums and rapped a little, and Pat sang and played bass. Our friend Mike came and learned two songs in half an hour. That show we met EveryNight Drive, It's Not Over and the Corrao Q. It's Not Over was really tight and we could tell they were serious about what they did. Corrao Q's drummer, Simon, had been a good friend of mine but I never saw his band. They blew me away with their musicianship and passion on the stage. Til this day I think they are my favorite local band from S.I. and at the time they were 15 and 16 years old, I was 18 (24 now).
Steve, Justin, Pat. POF

The event we played was called Purge the Purge. PTP was started up by a friend, Carissa Sutter. It was an organization that raised awareness and money for girls with eating disorders. (Funny that we met during a benefit and reunited for one...) The next show Pat and I played, I switched between drums and frontman while our friend Steve switched between guitar and drums. It was weird, it was bad, but we received so much love from Corrao Q and the other band we really connected with that day, EveryNight Drive.

EveryNight Drive were like the good guys of the music scene. Everyone loved them, everyone pushed for them to make it, everyone loved them as people and as musicians. Pat and I wanted to be like E.N.D. Everything they did was great, the sound, the music, the performance, their characters. They liked us when we started out and we developed a great relationship with them that had us playing CD release shows, Halloween shows, and even Roseland Ballroom together. Their drummer, Manny, filled in for us several times (Simon too), and was even in the band for a brief period of time as we could never keep a drummer after I made the switch to vocals.

Backslashes & Bad Ideas, Sandy Benefit show. Photo by Vlad Grach
We met most of Backslashes & Bad Ideas (Cobalt Sky, kinda) at a PTP show where EveryNight Drive played a showcase for a record label. That was sometime in 2008, early 2009, I believe. Cobalt Sky was fronted by Nick DePalo who would become a friend over the next couple of years as he played with various projects and bands that we played shows with.

To my understanding, we met Spread the Rumor at a Purge the Purge show that was held at the Cup in early 2009. They were another band we would "grow" up with and play shows with all the time. Those girls became my little sisters of music. They were amazing and tough too! Pat and I had asked if they needed help with equipment, and refused us!

I like to joke that these bands became the Superfriends of sorts because of all the time we spent performing and hanging out together, also, I'd like to shout out Pete King and his bands at the time, Groove Revival and Through the Year. They were an integral part of our scene as well.

By the end 2010 the Superfriends started falling apart a little bit with various problems I won't get into. Corrao Q was no longer a band, E.N.D. after several lineup changes was breaking up, Cobalt Sky was no more but Backslashes was born, and Spread the Rumor played their last show, not to mention our beloved home, the Cup was closing! On August 31st 2010 Manny ran a toss up between this last show, for the show of all shows at the Cup. That "last" show at the Cup featured ten frequenters/all-stars of the Cup minus Corrao Q. (READ ABOUT THAT HERE).

That show was very emotional as some of the scenes favorite bands disbanded and our home closed, (not for too long though). People were crying, dancing, hugging, and singing along. The house was packed with about 250 people who stayed from start to finish. I never experienced anything like that in my life. There was so much love and respect. After that show I didn't feel like music would ever be able to fill that experience in my heart, and for the most part it didn't, until this last show. The memories came flooding back as the familiar tunings of guitars and melodies of choruses came off the stage and into the speakers. It was beautiful, it was perfect, it was the best moments of 2007-2010, it was home.

Corrao Q, 2008. PTP show
That night Staten Island needed heroes to bring a little cheer back to our Island which had been ravaged by the Hurricane, and also a little cheer to a few humble musicians who are still on their grind who needed to be reminded of their youth. "Get Young" was the slogan of the freshly back in business EveryNight Drive after a two year divorce. They are now happily remarried and ready for new music! Corrao Q was a treat we may never see again, but they certainly felt the love and were just as good as they were in 2009. Spread the Rumor killed it, and I have a hunch we'll see these ladies again doing something together! Backslashes has been doing their thing and had a great 2012 after a somewhat not active 2011. It's Not Over is exploring a new style of music, and creating new opportunities for themselves. Process of Fusion had a great 2010 and 2011, but 2012 was really just a bad year for us musically, emotionally, and creatively. Honestly speaking, we were dead, but now our heads are on straight and 2013 is looking like its going to be a great year for us!

It's Not Over 2012
Here are some facts. December 23rd, we came together and raised $1270 that will go to help people displaced by Sandy. We performed to roughly 180 people. E.N.D. absolutely destroyed the Cup with garbage; balloons, silly string, and candy...damages not included. A scene that had went away came back for a little bit, and we all had a blast in doing so.

2012 ended with a bang, and hopefully that shot keeps ringing in 2013 as a rejuvenated bunch of non-famous musicians continue doing music whether it be solo, together, or in different bands. I love you all. Thank you for making me feel 19 again, thank you for caring about this cause as much as I did, thank you for being the amazing influential musicians and heroes I've always known you to be, and most importantly, thank you for giving me a reason to do what I love most several times a month, play music.
Corrao Q 2009 and Justin from POF.

Justin (POF), Manny (END), Simon (Corrao Q)

KidsWithSoul 'Puzzles of Ceres' Mixtape Review

By Gerard Ucelli

Hailing from Staten Island, NY, Leroy Goodwin better known as KidsWithSoul released his
debut R&B/Hip-Hop mixtape, Puzzles of Ceres in September 2012. If you were to create a recipe
of good music deriving from Frank Ocean, Childish Gambino, and Maxwell as ingredients, the
outcome is this mixtape.

With that being said, my appreciation of this mixtape is on a very high scale. KidsWithSoul
really puts in an amazing mix of rapping and singing. Not to mention that as a piece of work, it’s
well structured, and makes his style quite distinctive. It’s one of the first mixtapes that I listened
to in a while where I can honestly say I played it from beginning to end.

Getting into the songs, “The Cry of a Goddess” was the perfect first track to captivate a
listener into discovering more about the artist. Not only is it very soothing, it also makes you
think about how the rest of his work is going to sound like. To me, a good album is when the
first song makes you want to keep listening throughout. First impressions can really come a long
way and “The Cry of a Goddess” certainly proves that.

If one was to ask me which song from this mixtape I would instantly put on the
radio, “Weeping Skies (All I Do)” would be it. The piano in that track really sets the tone.
Personally speaking, that piano really motivates me to really pay attention to the lyrics. Although
it’s a very melancholy track, it brings out the melodic talent of KidsWithSoul. At the same time,
I feel that song out of all of them is the most relatable for a wider audience.

Going into more of his rapping, his rendition of “Ready or Not” by The Fugees really
expresses his talent in that spectrum. Every time I listen to his rendition on it, I feel like I’m
listening to the original version of it. The vintage aspect of how he recorded it portrays how
prosperous his flow and delivery is. That track also depicts how intellectual and insightful his
wordplay is.

Pete's Lost Luggage EP Review

Pete's Lost Luggage is a relatively new Staten Island band that brings back the sounds of one of my favorite era's of music, 2002-2005. There style is new school punk/angst filled dare I say emo punk. They sound a lot like a combination of New Found Glory, Brand New from Your Favorite Weapon and a little bit of Fall Out Boy circa Take this to Your Grave.

The band consists of:
Pete King - Vocals
Jon Marotte - Guitar
Carl LaPiedra - Bass
Chris Benne - Drums.

With that being said I absolutely love it! It's the sounds of my teenage years in High School all over. Little known secret, before I was a ravaging rap/rocker, I was actualyl a drummer/vocalist in punk bands for about six years. Ok, but enough about me, onto the EP cleverly titled, Greatest Hits Volume 3.

The first track, "Don't Touch the Radio, It's Not Yours" kicks off like something straight out of NFG's earlier albums but adds a different dynamic with the small bursts of screaming. The prechorus resembles F.O.B. and the chorus sounds like Brand New, especially the way the music does the pause of the drums with the chugging guitars in between. It has everything in one song, and still sounds unique to them. A solid start to the EP.

Next up, "I'm High, Everything is Funny" is my least favorite track of the album, but that's not to say it's bad, just my personal taste. The best part of this song is the more aggressive layered vocals at the end. It almost creates a rallying cry and anthem, which is what punk is all about.

"Slow it Down to a Tempo of Faster" is quite simply put, awesome. The band was definitely not lying when they named this one as it's raw in your face punk reminiscent of early MxPx. Benne's drum playing is great on this track, and Pete's melodic yelling is on point as this is clearly a song of emotion.

The EP closes out with "Steve! Look Out for that Stingray" (and for the record it is not too soon for a Steve Irwin joke)... Again, this song starts out with a blast of guitars and drums. This is by far the longest track on the album clocking in at 4:00 minutes while the rest range from 1:30-3:00. I like the duel chorus vocals on this followed by the nice interlude/solo of the bass around the 1:50 marker.

Overall, Greatest Hits Volume 3 hits the mark as a first EP. The songs are all very catchy and well written. The album's single is definitely "Don't Touch the Radio, It's Not Yours." The only possible gripe I can have with the album is the quality of recording, but then again it's a demo and I love it, it almost suits the sound and style.

One thing for sure is when they hit the studio to record a full length, they'll have a fan patiently waiting to be handed a copy.

DJ BURNOUT
Born and raised on the mean streets of Brooklyn, DJ Burnout started his musical journey when he was just 6. He was abducted by alien lifeforms and they introduced him to the rave scene. It was at this moment that Burnout knew he wanted to be a DJ.

He first became interested in the electronic music scene in 1994. In 2002, aged 14, he won his first set of turntables in a game of Russian Roulette. At the age of 17, he was already being viewed as Brooklyn's answer to DJ Qbert. He did various warm up sets before the doors opened in clubs hosting major names. In 2006, he achieved his big break when he realized he was big in the game. It was after this point when he started getting gigs at big events such as Highline NYC and Ultrabar DC.

After receiving several offers, Burnout joined Phinger Ink Records Recordings, who helped distribute his first internet release, 'Burnout Spark That' in 2008. Though the album didn't sell as many as he probably would have liked, Burnout is a fighter and since 2010 has been locked in the studio perfecting his craft.

Suffice to say, the electro house, dirty dutch, and dubstep scene should be expecting big things from Burnout in 2011.

What A Mess I've Made Review & Interview

I'm pretty sure his name has come up my blog before, but Javan Aybar is truly an amazing musician. Stepping on stage with his acoustic guitar, Javan opens his mouth and belts out some of the most unlikely vocals you'd expect from this tattoo clad artist. I say this completely out of love, because Javan has an outstanding voice and a knack for excellent catchy song writing. Yet again Javan has proved as What A Mess I've Made, continues to provide the listener with easy enjoyable heartfelt music. The passion is there, and the love of music in it's pure raw form is there. My band is a huge fan of him, especially the cover he did of our song, and he's a big fan of ours. So as Javan would say, "Don't cheer me, boo me, it's louder."

From Javan
It’s a 13 track ‘not the best quality’ self-titled album I recorded in my room consisting of just vocals and a guitar. I dropped the Mickey House Hands name and it’s the first stuff I’ve wrote/recorded and put up/out under the new name: What A Mess I’ve Made. There are a few songs on the Facebook player, but the whole album is up on my bandcamp site. It’s up for a ‘Pay What You Want If You Want’ download. I have a few ‘homemade’ physical copies of the album if anyone is interested as well as which I would sell/bring to shows when I start playing more, for the same ‘Pay What You Want If You Want.’ I also have the first CD IAMSUS I recorded under the Mickey Mouse Hands name which has 19 songs on it for free download.

Where did you get the name What I mess I've Made, and why did you drop Mickey Mouse Hands?
What A Mess I've Made is a line from a song called "Empty Out Your Stomach" by Lydia. I’m in love with that band. I was thinking of a new name for a long time and WAMIM was the winner. As for MMH, I was really never a fan of that. It was a random name that I overheard while figuring out what to name my Myspace page when I made one to upload a few songs to it back in 2006 I think. It’s not that I don’t like Mickey Mouse, but it was just a silly name in my opinion. Hopefully this dropping of the name also kills the amount of Mickey Mouse related gifts I receive for bdays, xmas and what not (haha), even though I did enjoy them.

What's your personal style and what are your biggest influences?
Even though it’s an acoustic project, my influences vary in genre, but to name a few: Daphne Loves Derby/Wolftron, City & Colour, Lydia, Copeland, Coheed & Cambria, Dear & The Headlights, The Number 12 Looks Like You, The Fall of Troy, and The Rocket Summer.

How come you are an acoustic artist and don't play with a band?
When I first started to try the whole writing originals thing, it was just easier for me to pick up an acoustic guitar, write songs and do my own thing. I would definitely one day love to see how this acoustic project would sound with the addition of some other instruments (drum, bass, guitar, etc) though.

When did you start music- singing, guitar?
I started playing guitar around 15-16. I use to be in chorus back in elementary school. I think that’s what set it off, because I really went in, come chorus time and after that.

What are your plans with this solo project?
I don’t really have any set plans with this. I want to write/record more songs, I want to play more solo shows, and maybe sometime soon play a show with a backing band. I’ve currently been jamming with a few friends in a non-acoustic genre. It’s looking promising. I think that’s my main focus musically at the moment, but regardless, I wont stop with the acoustic thing.

What is the coolest/memorable moment you've had as a musician?
One of my most memorable moments was when I finished my first piece of recording which was a six song EP (I was so proud of it back then, but boy, it was terrible) and I posted a bulletin about it. A few hours later I had about 20 replies from people I didn’t really know, who wanted to buy a copy. 20 might not be a lot to some, but it was wonderful to me.
